Dan Murphy was a two-time TCIL state champion in the discus and one of the nation’s top performers in the event by the time he capped his Jesuit career. Excelling in the discus, shot put, long jump and high jump, Murphy helped Jesuit to a victory at the 1970 TCIL State Championships after capturing his first individual state title. Named co-captain prior to the 1971 campaign, Murphy emerged as the top-ranked discus thrower in the state of Texas and was ranked 10th overall in the nation. He once again led the Rangers with numerous first-place finishes, including a repeat as TCIL state discus champion.

After graduating from Jesuit, Murphy attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he lettered all four years as the Midshipmen’s top discus thrower while being a part of a unit that was ranked as the top dual-meet team in the country. His track accomplishments at Navy included a second-place finish in the 1973 IC4A track meet, a third-place result at the 1973 Penn Relays, and a first-place finish at the 1975 Ivy League Championships.

After his college graduation, Murphy earned his wings as a Naval Aviator and completed a successful 20-year career serving all over the world. He served in the anti-submarine arena, earning designations as both an Anti-Submarine Warfare and Naval Training Specialist. Special recognitions included selection as the 1982 Primary Flight Instructor of the Year and selection as the commanding officer of the Naval Air Technical Training Center.
