Herb Sheaner became track & field and cross country coach at Jesuit Dallas in 1955 following a competitive career at the University of Texas under legendary coach Clyde Littefield. In 1957, Sheaner sought and Jesuit hosted the first TCIL sanctioned state track & field championship meet. In 1958, he initiated the first high school cross country meet ever to be held in Dallas.

During Sheaner's 21-year tenure as head coach, Jesuit won six TCIL Track & Field Championships. In 1964, the Jesuit squad more than doubled the points of all other teams combined at the state championship.

Coach Sheaner inaugurated the Jesuit Relays in 1964. Upon his retirement in 1975, the meet, which has grown to become the largest high school-only track meet in the entire state of Texas, was renamed the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays.
