Jesuit’s first state wrestling champion, four-time varsity letterman Jamile Ashmore Jr., followed the footsteps of his father Jay ’52, into Jesuit’s Sports Hall of Fame. Competing against all public and private schools in the state, Ashmore, prior to his state championship year, had achieved a third-place state finish his junior year and fifth place his sophomore year. As a two-time Dallas district champion, Ashmore won the Outstanding Wrestler Award each year, replicating those honors at the St. Mark’s and Bishop Lynch Invitationals.
A three-time Ranger MVP, a two-time team captain, and a winner of both the Jesuit Captain Leadership Award and the Eric Veteto Memorial Award, Ashmore earned All-American honors by capturing fourth place at the Prep National Tournament in Pennsylvania. As the Texas Junior Olympic national freestyle state champion, he also merited a spot on the Texas All-Star Junior Olympic Freestyle Team in 1987 and 1988. In addition, he won a championship at the Cotton Bowl Classic National Open, was a finalist in the Oklahoma Open, and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for his dominating performance at New York’s Wendy’s Classic.
His impressive accomplishments at Jesuit earned Ashmore a full athletic scholarship to California State University-Bakersfield, where he competed for one year before accepting another full ride to compete for Ohio State University.
