Jamile “Jay”Ashmore led the Rangers in yells and cheers for the football and basketball teams of 1948-1952. During his student days at Jesuit, he was active in gymnastics circles of the Southwest, winning the Texas State Gymnastics Championship. After graduation from Jesuit in 1952, he was awarded a full athletic scholarship for gymnastics to Florida State University where he led the Seminoles to the 1955 AAU National Team Championship.
Ashmore was the NCAA gold medal winner in free exercise at the 1956 national championships held at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His competitive career continued past his days at FSU, winning National AAU gold medals in free exercise in 1959 and 1961, and in rings in 1959. He won the Pan American Championship in rings in 1959 and 1963.
Ashmore became a nationally-recognized gymnastics coach, serving as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois, the United States Military Academy, and as the head coach at the University of Texas.
In 1993, Ashmore was elected to the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was inducted into the Florida State University Hall of Fame.
