Joe Haggar III was a standout in football, baseball and track during his career at Jesuit Dallas, although his most lasting contributions occurred on the grid iron, where he helped guide the Rangers to back-to-back appearances in the TCIL State Championship, including a stunning victory over St. Thomas (Houston) to win the 1968 crown. In addition to his athletic prowess, Haggar was a standout in the classroom as well, and was the recipient of Jesuit’s Scholar Athlete Award as a senior.

Haggar continued his football career at the University of Notre Dame, playing defensive for the Fighting Irish while participating in three bowl games. Haggar’s appearance in the 1970 Cotton Bowl was significant, as it marked the return of Notre Dame to a bowl game after a 45-year self-imposed absence. The Irish came up short against the undefeated, nationally-ranked No. 1 Texas Longhorns, dropping a hard-fought 21-17 battle. The following year, the Irish exacted revenge on the Longhorns while snapping their 30-game winning streak with a 24-11 victory in the Cotton Bowl. With the victory, the Irish moved up to a final ranking of No. 2, behind Nebraska. In 1973, Haggar and the Irish played in the Orange Bowl against those same Cornhuskers. During Haggar’s tenure at UND, the team had a record of 35-8 and were nationally ranked inside the top 15 each year.
