Attending the University of New Mexico, where he was an All-American during his freshman year, Lee made the decision to turn pro at the age of 21. After placing in the top five at the PGA qualifying school in 1980, Lee joined the PGA Tour, finishing second overall that year at the Magnolia Golf Classic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Lee is a past member of the Australian, Asian, and South American PGA Tours, winning 31 events in six countries.
