Matt Miller was a letterman and served as captain of the Jesuit Dallas soccer team his junior and senior years. He also played for the Longhorn and Club America soccer clubs while at Jesuit and also played on the U.S. under 17 National Team.

Miller was drafted as one of two high school players by the Tampa Bay Rowdies Football Club of the North American Soccer League. He spent the 1982 offseason training with the Sao Paulo Football Club in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1983, the Tampa Bay Rowdies lent him to the Dallas Americans of the American Soccer League. During that time, he scored eight goals and was credited with one assist, making him the team's second-leading scorer. Miller then played for the Tacoma Stars of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In 1984, he returned to Dallas to play outdoors for the Dallas Americans.
