Mike Grimes was a standout right-handed pitcher in the Jesuit Dallas baseball program. A four-time TCIL All-State selection, he enjoyed a successful collegiate and minor league career.
Grimes earned TCIL Second Team All-State honors in 1983 and was selected First Team All-State from 1984-86. He was voted the team's MVP his last three years as well, while securing First Team All-Metro accolades in 1985 and 1986.
Grimes was drafted in the 20th Round of the MLB Draft in 1986 by the San Diego Padres, but attended the University of Michigan on a full athletic scholarship. In 1989, he was the second round pick of the Oakland A’s. He played in the A’s minor league system from 1989-92 before being selected by the expansion Colorado Rockies in the 1992 expansion draft.
Grimes was honored on the 1989 Pre-Season Baseball American Honorable Mention All-American team and was named 1989 All-Big Ten.
