Paul Johnston not only lettered in baseball all three years he was at Jesuit, but he was selected for TCIL All-District honors at shortstop all three seasons. Guiding the Rangers to the 1973 TCIL State Championship, Johnston picked up TCIL All-State accolades and was the recipient of the team’s Ranger Heart Award. A standout captain with both his glove and bat, he graduated from Jesuit with high honors.

Johnston shined at Texas Tech. Switched from shortstop to the outfield, he started for three seasons. As a sophomore in 1975, Johnston hit .400 in Southwest Conference play and finished the year ranked fifth in the league in batting. He fell a single percentage point of the SWC batting crown in 1977, toting a .403 average for the season. As a senior, Johnston was selected to the All-SWC team and to the NCAA All-District 6 team, while he became just the fifth player in conference history to produce two seasons hitting above .400.
