Averaging over 24 points per game his senior year, Norman E. “Woody” Taliaferro was not only the basketball team’s leading scorer, but also the Rangers’ top rebounder. He also paced the team in field goal and free throw percentage during his final two years donning the Blue & Gold.

Team captain as a junior and senior, Taliaferro led the Rangers to back-to-back appearances in the TCIL state finals while collecting First Team All-State accolades after each season. In 1965, he was named to the Dallas Morning News Dallas-Ft. Worth Metro first team for all schools, public and private, and was selected as a Catholic High School All-American.

Attending SMU on a full basketball scholarship, Taliaferro was a two-year starter for the Mustangs while logging meaningful minutes all four years. He was on the Mustang team that won the Southwest Conference Championship during the 1965-66 and 1966-67 seasons.
