Jesuit junior Brendan Feehery won the State Championship in the 200 individual medley and helped lead Jesuit to its best-ever team finish at the UIL State Meet. Feehery swam a 1:47.60 in the finals of the 200 IM, bettering his own semifinal time by more than two seconds and earning the seventh-fastest time in the 45-year history of the UIL State Meet. Feehery becomes the second Jesuit Ranger to win a UIL state championship in swimming.
As a team, Jesuit earned its highest finish ever, placing fifth in the state with 97 points in the championship meet. The Rangers had never finished higher than eighth place (2014), and never scored more than 89.5 points (2006). The win includes points from Feehery's two individual events, as well as significant contributions from
Nolan Daniels' individual swim, and two team relays featuring Feehery, Daniels,
Aedan Quinn, and
Jack Ayres.
The 200 freestyle relay became just the second Jesuit relay team to medal at the state meet, earning third place with a time of 1:24.24. Daniels, Ayres, Quinn, and Feehery have broken and re-broken the Jesuit school record three times this season in the event, and their state finals time was the 14
th fastest in state meet history.
Feehery also placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, and broke a 23-year-old Jesuit record in the process. His time of 56.52 broke the Jesuit record set by Drew Calver in 1992, the longest standing mark in the
Jesuit Swimming & Diving Record Book. Daniels swam a 21.06 in his event, the 50 freestyle, during Friday's prelims. He placed seventh in the state in the event and finished just .09 seconds shy of the Jesuit record.
"I'm really proud of all these guy," said head coach
Doug Moyse. "We've been pointing towards this meet all season. Everything we've done, everything we've worked hard for, it really paid off."
Feehery said he was surprised and humbled by the victory.
"It's a great feeling," said the Jesuit junior. "I came in not really expecting to win. I just wanted to swim as fast as I could, work as hard as I could. It worked out in the end."
Ranger swimmers competed in five events at this year's state championship, and broke school records in three of them. Jesuit also added names to the national All-American list: Feehery was under the automatic All-American time standard in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, Daniels was under the consideration All-American standard for the 50 freestlye, and the relay team earned automatic All-American for the 200 freestyle relay and consideration All-American for the 400 freestyle relay. The All-American list recognized the Top 100 swimmers in each category; automatic qualifiers timed under last year's top 50, while consideration qualifiers have a chance to be named All-Americans later this spring.
The best-ever state meet finish caps a hugely successful season for the Rangers. Jesuit won the
District 9-6A Championship in January, then placed third at the Region 3-6A meet. The season also saw four different school records fall. Feehery becomes just the second Jesuit swimmer to ever win a UIL State Championship. Matt Thompson '09 won four state titles in the same event, the 200 individal medley, and won two titles in the 100 backstroke between 2006-2009.
