Jesuit Golf earned second place at the UIL Region II Tournament this week and earned the school's second-ever berth to the State Championship Tournament in Austin. The Rangers will travel to State for the first time since 2008, when the team was led by then-freshman Jordan Spieth.

The Jesuit team of
JC Campbell,
Martin Breedijk,
Will Peavy,
Camden Suhy, and
Chase Fetrow scored a team total of 599 over two days at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. The score gave Jesuit a one shot advantage over third place The Woodlands, and a three shot victory over fourth place Highland Park. Austin Westlake won the tournament; the top three teams from each regional qualify for state.

"I am so proud of the boys," said head coach
Cathy Marino. "They were so calm and composed in that final round – I have never seen them play like that!"

Campbell shot a 73 on Monday and a 75 on Tuesday, for a tournament total of 148 and a top ten finish. His teammates were not far behind: Breedijk shot a 75/74 for a tournament total of 149, Peavy shot a 75/75 for a tournament total of 150, and Suhy shot a 76/76 for a tournament total of 152.

The tournament in Waco included a practice round Sunday afternoon followed by two competitive rounds Monday and Tuesday. The team played their practice round as Jesuit alum Jordan Spieth was playing at Augusta National en route to his Master's victory. The Jesuit team finished their practice round then gathered in the club house at Cottonwood Creek – along with dozens of golfers from other schools across the region – to watch Spieth win the Master's and put on the green jacket.
Â
Coach Marino said she has no doubt that Spieth's inspiration helped this team succeed. "When it came down to the end and we were within one or two strokes, the boys played with such confidence and such composure," she said. "I have no doubt they got that from watching Jordan on Sunday."
Â
The team now prepares for the UIL State Championship Tournament, held April 27 and 28 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
