Merkel won the silver medal in the Men's Junior 1x event at the 2016 SouthWest Ergometer Amateur Tournament (SWEAT) Regatta, helping the Rangers additionally earn the men's team trophy. The senior and United States Naval Academy commit earned the first medal for the program in over five years, clocking a 6:17.10 for the 2,000 meter race, breaking the 12-year old record of 6:18 in the process.
