Seven unanswered goals set the tone for the Jesuit Dallas Rangers against the Coppell Cowboys, but a stifling defense won the evening in a stellar, 7-2 showing Friday evening at Postell Stadium.
Senior
Blake Buell and junior
Jack Freeman sparked the Jesuit scoring column with two goals apiece, while Ranger fourth year
Matthew Favre, junior Reese Ellison and sophomore
Grayson Hassell also found twine. Ellison added six ground balls to lead the team, and junior goalkeeper
Luke Millican snagged four ground balls alongside three saves in cage.Â
In total, the Rangers, ranked No. 3 in the most recent
LaxPower.com Texas Division I State Rankings, combined for 28 ground balls compared to nine secured by the No. 15 Cowboys, scoring on both extra-man opportunities and converting on all 14 clear opportunities. The squad won the faceoff battle, 7-4, while junior
David Sprock scored the team's lone assist on Buell's second goal of the contest.
Buell opened the scoring four minutes into the opening quarter, and the Ranger defense made their first convincing stand allowing the lone tally to stand until the 4:17 mark, when Hassell tallied the team's second goal. Ellison struck with one second left in the first to spot the Blue and Gold a 3-0 lead before Favre, Freeman and Buell found twine in the second quarter to send Jesuit into the break leading, 6-0.
Jesuit's final goal came with 10:13 left in the third, when Freeman found the back of the net for the team's seventh goal, and the defense held the Cowboys in check down the stretch, allowing only a pair of goals during a fourth quarter offensive bevy from Coppell, keeping the visitors away from the Ranger lead until the final buzzer.
The Rangers will continue a three-game homestand on Friday, Apr. 1 against St. Mark's, set to battle the Lions at Postell Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Jesuit Dallas will close the busy two week schedule with a Sunday clash with Indianapolis Catholic.
