Game Recap: Lacrosse - Class A |

No. 2 Rangers Advance to THSLL Championship Game

Two goals within the final 90 seconds provided a swing of momentum for the Jesuit Dallas Rangers, who used six unanswered goals to topple Episcopal School of Dallas, 8-7, in a Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) State Championship Semifinal on Saturday, May 14.

Senior Zachary Kissick led the Rangers (16-2) with two goals, one of seven members of the Blue and Gold that found the back of the net.  Junior Jack Freeman tallied the game-winner with 4:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, while seniors Blake Buell, Garrett Munck and John Michael Priddy alongside junior Daniel Burnum and sophomore David Sprock found twine.

Ranger netminder Luke Millican finished the contest with 12 saves in cage, and Jesuit converted all 16 clear attempts throughout the contest despite losing the ground ball battle, 25-24.

Kissick opened the scoring with a goal 57 seconds into the contest, but four unanswered by Episcopal quickly turned the tables on the Rangers.  Munck began the rally in the waning moments of the second quarter, scoring an unassisted tally with 2:49 on the first half clock.

Freeman found Buell unguarded on the far side wing, and the Rollins College commit responded with a near post scorcher to reduce the lead to a single goal.  Kissick tied it on the ensuing faceoff, getting an opening shooting lane off of a pass by Burnum and launching a low ball under the stick of the Eagles' goalkeeper.

After Burnum assisted on Kissick's second goal of the contest, the University of North Carolina commit returned the favor in the third, placing a cross-crease pass right into the stick of Sprock, who scored on the doorstep to give the Rangers their first lead since the opening quarter.  The Eagles had several chances in the final seconds of the third, but Millican and the Jesuit defense held firm to keep the one-goal advantage intact

Sprock ended a near 17-minute scoreless streak for both teams with his goal at the 6:30 mark of the fourth quarter.  Starting on the far side near the top of the offensive zone, Sprock used nifty footwork to get past his defender, quickly sending a shot on cage that snuck into the lower right 90 for a two-goal cushion.

Priddy collected the ensuing faceoff and, taking advantage of the transition opportunity, launched a 10-yard rocket to increase the lead to three.  After Episcopal scored, Freeman found the back of the net on a turnaround shot to spot the Rangers an 8-5 lead.

Episcopal staged a late rally, scoring a pair of goals under the 30-second mark, but the Jesuit midfield was able to disrupt a transition attempt by the Eagles in the waning moments, allowing time to run out on Episcopal's comeback aspirations and punch the Rangers' ticket to championship Sunday.

On Sunday, Jesuit will battle Highland Park in a rematch of the top two seeds from the THSLL North Region.  Scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, Sunday's championship contest marks the third THSLL Championship game appearance in program history, the last in 2014, and the first meeting between the two programs with the title on the line.

Highland Park has won the last two matchups between the two programs in the THSLL Playoffs (2010, 2014), adding a 9-6 win over the Rangers this season, while Jesuit enters the contest on a five-game winning streak.
