In a back-and-forth battle between two of the perennial powers in the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL), the Highland Park Scots kept the Jesuit Dallas Rangers scoreless in the fourth quarter, holding on for a 7-5 win on Friday evening at Postell Stadium.
Â
Five Rangers reached the goal column, anchored by a goal and assist apiece from junior
David Sprock and sophomore
Jacob Jackson. Seniors
Daniel Burnum,
Trey Wiederecht and sophomore
Peter Buell scored for the Rangers (10-4). Senior
Luke Millican made 12 saves in cage, while fellow fourth year
Dixon Smith secured a team-high four groundballs. Junior
Aidan Johnston and sophomore
Matthew Priddy grabbed three ground balls each, and junior
Jack Tabor won six faceoffs.
Â
Wiederecht scored the first goal of the game two minutes into the opening quarter, and Buell scored at the 7:48 mark, matching a Highland Park tally to keep the Rangers in the lead. The Scots used three unanswered goals to take a two-goal advantage in the second quarter, holding Jesuit without a goal for over 13 minutes before Burnum snapped Jesuit's skid with 8:24 remaining in the half.
Â
Trailing by one goal heading into the third, Sprock netted an equalizer 90 seconds into the second half. However, back-to-back tallies from Highland Park put the pressure back on the Rangers.
Jackson scored with 2:26 remaining in the third, but the Scots' defense, anchored by several critical saves from goalkeeper Doak Walker, kept Jesuit off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, adding an insurance goal with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth to secure the victory.
Â
Jesuit Dallas will close the regular season on Friday, April 28 on the road against Episcopal School of Dallas. The rematch of the 2016 Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) State Semifinal between the Rangers and Eagles is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
