Game Recap: Hockey - Varsity Gold |

Third-Period Rally Falls Short Against Coppell

The Jesuit Dallas hockey team made a late push at a 2-0 third period deficit, but a stalwart Coppell defense held the Rangers away from the equalizer and handed Jesuit its first loss, 2-1, on Thursday, October 27 at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Richardson.

Jesuit launched 43 shots at the Coppell net as junior forward Matthew Wrobel scored his first goal of the season midway through the third period. Senior Bryce Clark and sophomore Luke Toppins assisted on Wrobel's goal as both earned their first assist of the young season. Junior Jack Rahlfs made 24 saves in net, keeping the Rangers within striking distance by turning aside eight shots in the second period.

Coppell struck first early in the opening period, lighting the lamp 3:21 into the period for an early 1-0 lead. Cowboy netminder Robert Longbotham racked up 42 saves during the contest, holding the Rangers in check with 11 saves during the first period. A scoreless second preceded Jesuit's dramatic comeback attempt as the Blue and Gold took 12 shots during the second stanza but entered the final period of regulation facing a one-goal deficit.

A goal from Coppell's Clark Parlier complicated Jesuit's comeback, giving the Cowboys a 2-0 lead three minutes into the third. However, the Rangers cut the lead in half on Wrobel's even-strength goal 23 seconds after the Cowboy tally, injecting life into the Jesuit bench. However, despite Jesuit launching 20 shots at Coppell, the Cowboys were able to hold the Rangers scoreless over the final 8:57 of the contest to clinch the win.

The Rangers will return to action on Thursday, October 4 against Allen. The Eagles enter Thursday's contest with an 0-2-0 record following a 3-2 loss to Frisco on Sept. 20 and a 3-2 setback to McKinney on Sept. 27. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.
