Game Recap: Lacrosse - Class A |

Rangers Fall to ESD in Double Overtime

In a game that spanned four days due to a Friday lightning delay, Jesuit Dallas and Episcopal School of Dallas squared off in a key Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) West Division I matchup. After a lightning delay halted a 9-9 tie with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter, ESD upended Jesuit, 11-10, in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Tommy Hovivian and freshman Sam Teachout scored three goals apiece to lead the charge for the Rangers while senior Teddy Wagner tacked on two assists. Senior Marshall Rodegast and Hovivian snagged five ground balls each. Junior goalkeeper William Moran made nine saves while senior Aidan Johnston led the charge on the Ranger backline with three caused turnovers.

How it Happened

  • Episcopal School of Dallas jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by U.S. Naval Academy commit Patrick Skalniak. Junior Matthew Priddy got Jesuit Dallas on the scoreboard, scoring an unassisted goal with 4:34 remaining in the opening stanza.

  • The Eagles and Rangers traded goals before another two-goal run by ESD provided the visitors with a three-goal advantage. Jesuit tied the contest with 59 seconds remaining in the half after a goal from Hassell, back-to-back tallies from Teachout and an equalizer from Hovivian. Episcopal's Brandon Meaux scored with three seconds left in the half to take a one-goal lead into halftime.

  • An Eagles' goal opened the second half for a two-goal advantage, but the resilient Rangers forced their way back into a tie with back-to-back goals. Individual efforts from Priddy and Hassell knotted the game at 8-8 before Hovivian capped his hat trick with 1:55 after another Eagles' goal to force a 9-9 tie. After Hovivian's goal, play was suspended for lightning within the immediate area of the Jesuit Dallas campus. The game was rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 17 to close out the competition on Friday night.

  • Once play resumed on Tuesday, ESD scored a transition goal 37 seconds into the fourth quarter to secure another one-goal lead. The Eagles' defense looked poised to keep the Rangers at bay, but with 5:24 remaining Wagner found an open Teachout, who fired a long shot past ESD netminder Prescott King to complete the hat trick and tie the contest once again.

  • Despite several opportunities for both squads within the final five minutes of regulation, the two defenses stood tall to send the game into overtime. In the final moments of the first overtime session, senior David Sprock slipped past one defender with an open look to the net, but a critical save from King preserved the tie and forced the contest into a second, sudden victory overtime period. ESD's Braden Rhone scored 28 seconds into overtime to clinch the win for the Eagles.
