Strong Match Play Propels Rangers to Dominant win Over Lewisville

11/4/2019 1:54:00 PM

A senior-laden lineup kept its early-season momentum intact as Jesuit Dallas moved to 2-0 on the year with a convincing, 12-3 win over Lewisville on Saturday at AMF Spare Time. Taking a 6-1 lead after match play, the Rangers edged the Fighting Farmers in the Baker games to secure the win.

Sophomore Hayden Montpas scored the team's highest match play total, scoring a 384 with a 182 in game one followed by a 202 in the second match play game. In his first game, Montpas narrowly missed a clean game after leaving one pin on the lanes in the first frame but earned marks in nine consecutive frames to finish the game. The sophomore threw nine clean frames in game two, working out of a jam after only hitting the seven-pin on his first throw of the game but cleaning it up with a second-throw spare before proceeding to hit five more strikes in the contest. Montpas picked up five single-pin spares and totaled eight strikes on the afternoon to earn a 384-358 win over Lewisville's Raul Castilleja.

Senior Jack Corrales improved to 2-0 on the year with a 373-281 win over Luke Meinis. Corrales opened the game with three strikes in the first four frames to take a 108 score into the back half of the game. Two strikes to start the 10th frame pushed Corrales over the 200-pin plateau for this second time this season. The senior added two more strikes and five spares to his second game total en route to the match play point.

In the remaining match play bouts, senior Joey Berven hit six strikes and won his match point, 342-277, converting a split on the first frame of game two en route to a 179 second game. A 144 from senior Jack Holloran and 161 from classmate Silas Hartman resulted in a combined, 305-242 win for Jesuit's final match point. Senior Matthew Vincent fell nine pins shy of the sweep despite throwing seven strikes over the two games.

Jesuit took an early lead in the baker games with a 159-144 decision in game one, followed by a one-pin win in game two. The Fighting Famers edged Jesuit in the final baker game by nine pins, but the Rangers secured enough of a lead through the first two games to earn the final points with a 496-489 aggregate total.

The Rangers will return to action on Monday, Nov. 11 when the Blue and Gold will compete at their home lanes for the first time this season. Jesuit will battle L.D. Bell at 6:30 p.m. at USA Bowl, hoping to keep the team's unbeaten streak intact. With Jesuit's win on Saturday, the Rangers have won 13 consecutive matches dating back to the 2018 season.
