Jesuit Dallas Competes Among Country's Best at USA Hockey Nationals

The Jesuit Dallas hockey team competed among the nation's top teams at the 2019 USA Hockey/Chipotle High School National Championships in Strongsville, Ohio on Mar. 28-30. The Blue and Gold went winless over the three-game span and was unable to advance out of pool play following an 8-0 setback to national semifinalist Edina (Minn.), a 5-1 loss to eventual national champion Santa Margarita (Calif.) and a tournament-closing, 4-2 setback with Bishop McCourt (Pa.)

Junior Jack Rahlfs exceled over the three games, racking up 173 saves. Facing several high-powered offensive teams, the junior averaged 57.7 saves per game to provide Jesuit the opportunity to light the lamp on the other end of the ice. Seniors JonMichael Dragojevic, Bryce Clark and sophomore Seth Dragojevic scored the team's three goals of the tournament as the Rangers rebounded from the tournament-opening setback to Edina with a pair of hard-fought performances against Santa Margarita and Bishop McCourt.

Against Santa Margarita, JonMichael Dragojevic scored with 42 seconds remaining in the opening period to give Jesuit a 1-0 lead, capitalizing on one of Jesuit's three shot attempts of the period for the early lead. The Eagles took over in the second period, outshooting Jesuit 27-2 in the stanza while taking advantage of two successful power play opportunities to take a 3-1 lead into the third. Santa Margarita would add two more goals in the third period while holding Jesuit to only 17 two shots in the third for the win.

Bishop McCourt jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the midway point of the second period after blanking the Rangers in the opening stanza. However, the Ranger forechecking unit came alive in the second and stifled Bishop McCourt as Jesuit got on the board at the 7:22 mark after sophomore James McCown found Clark for Jesuit's first goal, cutting the Crushers' lead in half.

Bishop McCourt would add two goals in the first three minutes of the third period, taking a 4-1 lead into the final moments of the third period. The Rangers would cut into the lead on a goal by Seth Dragojevic off of a feed by JonMichael, but Bishop McCourt was able to keep Jesuit at bay down the stretch to clinch the win.

In the tournament opener against Edina, Jesuit was unable to stop a determined Hornets contingent whom took 75 shots during the contest. The Rangers were unable to capitalize on five power play opportunities while Edina scored four goals in the first, one in the second and three in the third for the convincing win.

The national tournament appearance punctuates a stellar season which saw the Blue and Gold clinch the fifth state championship in program history and first since the 2015 season. The Rangers defeated Allen in the Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) Pure Division State Championship to earn the trip to nationals en route to securing a 12-11-0 overall record.

JonMichael Dragojevic led the team with 22 goals and 16 points, followed by 15 goals from Seth Dragojevic and 14 goals from senior Matthew Wrobel. Seniors Bryce Clark and Joseph Van Beek secured 15 points apiece while fellow fourth year Nicholas Zang scored 13 points to cap the Rangers' double-digit scorers. Rahlfs racked up 538 saves during the season, closing the year with a 3.44 goals against average and a 91.2 save percentage.
