Teachout Scores Game-Winner, Rangers Win Division in Double Overtime Classic

Junior Sam Teachout fired home the game-winner 1:46 into the second overtime period to give Jesuit Dallas an 8-7, double-overtime win over Episopal School of Dallas on Thursday on the ESD campus. A game resumed with 58 seconds left in the first overtime after being delayed by lightning on Tuesday.

With Thursday's victory, the Rangers capture the North West Division of the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) ahead off its regular season finale against Highland Park on Friday.

ESD was unable to score at the resumption of overtime, taking a shot in the waning seconds of the 58-second restart but sending it wide. Sophomore Henry Suarez battled with ESD faceoff specialist Ross Chazanow at the faceoff "x" and produced a loose ball eventually awarded to the Rangers on a loose-ball push. Teachout's first shot from the right wing was high, but his second was true as the junior fired a rocket past the Eagles' netminder for the victory.

Jesuit (13-2, 5-0) faced a two-goal deficit at the end of the first quarter, but outscored ESD (11-3, 4-1), 6-2 in the second and third. The Rangers held a two-goal lead with 1:03 remaining in the fourth quarter, but ESD scored twice over the final 63 seconds to force the overtime period. The Eagles won 14-of-18 faceoffs, but Jesuit forced eight turnovers, including three in the third quarter, to swing the game in their favor. Jesuit went 17-of-17 in clear attempts as a failed clear in the third quarter led to one of Buell's key insurance goals.

Seniors Peter Buell and Jacob Jackson scored two goals apiece as classmate Zachary Rilley tacked on one goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper William Moran made eight saves in cage, including a massive, point-blank save to keep the game tied in overtime. Junior Billy Metz scored one goal as senior Matthew Priddy secured three ground balls.

Metz opened the scoring for the Rangers with 4:49 left in the first quarter, but a game-opening tally by the Eagles and two unanswered goals at the end of the stanza sent ESD to the second with a 3-1 lead. Teachout ripped a long-distance shot on an extra-man opportunity in the second quarter to cut the lead to one before Teachout found Jackson on a point-to-point pass to tie the game with 7:57 left in the first half.

Rilley gave the Rangers their first lead of the game with 6:16 left in the second, taking a feed from Metz and lifting the shot over the outstretched stick of Eagles' netminder Auden Rudelson for a 4-3 lead. ESD tallied a goal with 5:10 left to tie the game at halftime.

ESD took the lead back in the third, but a disrupted clear attempt by the Eagles resulted in an equalizer by Jackson at the 6:36 mark. Buell took the game over in the waning moments of the third as Teachout found the Rollins' commit open at the point for a one-goal lead before Rilley placed a great cross-crease pass to the waiting stick of Buell to send Jesuit into the fourth quarter leading by two. The Eagles seemed to score in the final seconds of the third quarter, but the goal was waved off as the shot took place after the buzzer.

In the fourth, Moran made a key save with eight minutes left, staring down a close-range shot before making the save with his stick handle to keep the two-goal lead intact. However, ESD scored with a man up and 1:02 remaining before taking advantage of a defensive breakdown to tie the game with 22 seconds left.

In the four-minute overtime, ESD looked to win the game with a behind-the-net pass that landed into the stick of Reed Landin inches in front of the crease. Moran stuffed the shot and Jesuit had the opportunity to win the game with a man-up, but a Ranger turnover gave the ball back to ESD before play had to stop due to lightning.
