Southlake Carroll Stuns Jesuit in AT&T Metroplex Playoffs

Southlake Carroll scored with 56 seconds remaining in the third period to end Jesuit's quest for an AT&T Metroplex City Championship with a 5-4 win over the Rangers in the tournament semifinal on Thursday at the Starcenter in Richardson.

Jack Sweda, James McCown, Miles Dikun and Seth Dragojevic scored goals for Jesuit as the Rangers held a 4-3 lead with 8:11 left in the third period but allowed two unanswered goals over the final moments of the game. Senior Chase Phillips joined Matthew Craycraft, Charlie Cohen, Santiago Diaz and Sweda in the assist column. Senior Jack Rahlfs made 24 saves in goal, including 11 saves in the second period.

After Southlake struck early in the first period, Sweda scored on a rebound after Phillips ripped a shot towards the Bronco goal, tying the contest, 1-1. Early in the second period, McCown ripped a shot from the blue line that snuck past Dragon netminder Mitchell Evans to give Jesuit its first lead of the game. Southlake held Jesuit scoreless over the final 11:32 of the second while scoring with 1:50 remaining to tie the game again going into the second intermission.

The Dragons took the lead back with a shorthanded goal early in the third, but back-to-back tallies by Dikun and Dragojevic gave the Rangers a one-goal lead with 8:11 remaining. Southlake closed the third period with goals at the 4:13 and 56-second mark to flip the script on Jesuit and punch its ticket to the tournament championship against Frisco next Thursday.

Thursday also served as senior night for the Jesuit hockey program as seniors Bennett Croskey, Jack Rahlfs, Chase Peppard, Chase Phillips, Luke Skaggs were honored prior to puck drop.

Jesuit will now await its pool for the USHockey High School National Tournament, which will take place Mar. 26-30 in Mansfield, Texas. The Rangers earned the sixth state championship in program history in January at the Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) Division I Pure State Tournament and will advance to nationals for the second straight year.
