Jesuit, Ursuline Tennis Combine to Finish Third at TTCA Private School Team State Championship

The Jesuit Dallas tennis team paired up with the Ursuline Bears over the weekend in College Station, Texas, securing third place at the Texas Tennis Coaches' Association Private School Team Championships. The two teams combined to secure a 3-1 record over the three-day event, picking up wins over Cornerstone Christian and Awty International before upending tournament top seed John Cooper in the third place match.
 
In the opening round, Jesuit/Ursuline blanked Cornerstone Christian, 12-0. The Rangers excelled in doubles play as the pairing of freshman Van Davidson and senior Dillon Blanton secured a 6-0, 6-2 victory and were joined by the pairing of junior William Wayne and senior Ben Woodard, who secured a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Senior Connor Cole teamed up with Ursuline sophomore and four-star tennis prospect Erin Gan-Dy, upending Cornerstone Christian, 6-0, 6-0 to send the match into singles play with a combined 5-0 advantage. Blanton (6-1, 6-0), sophomore Mark Scucchi (6-0, 6-0), Woodard (6-1, 6-0) and Horler (6-0, 6-1) secured singles wins against Cornerstone Christian.
 
Jesuit and Ursuline advanced to the championship semifinals with a 7-1 win over Awty International. Cole and Gan-Dy powered the teams to a 4-1 lead in doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep before Cole secured a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles to help the Jesuit effort. Blanton won his singles match, 6-0, 6-0 to help clinch the match. Jesuit would fall in the semifinals to St. John's (Houston), 7-4, despite a sensational win by Cole and Gan-Dy in doubles, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7. Davidson battled with St. John's Shiv Khera, emerging victorious after falling in the first set, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
 
The third place match pit the Rangers and Bears against the Dragons from John Cooper. In doubles play, Blanton and Wayne (6-3, 6-4) alongside the pairing of Woodard and Scucchi (6-2, 6-4) gave the team and early 2-0 advantage before Ursuline went 1-1 in doubles to give John Cooper its first point of the match. Cole and Gan-Dy capped an undefeated run with a 7-5, 6-3 win to send the match into singles with Jesuit/Ursuline holding onto a 4-1 advantage. Cole (6-2, 6-0) Blanton (6-1, 6-3) and Horler (6-4, 6-2) secured singles wins to help put the match away.
 
Jesuit is scheduled to return to action on Friday, March 7 when the Rangers travel to Coppell.
