MCKINNEY, Texas - Jesuit Dallas sophomore
Van Davidson went 3-1 at the University Interscholastic League Region 1-6A Championship this weekend to qualify for the Boys State Tournament in singles.
Davidson won both of his matches on Friday to move into the semifinal round. After waiting out a rainy Saturday morning at The Courts at McKinney, the semis began in the afternoon. Davidson fell to Southlake Carroll's Rushil Rajpal in straight sets, meaning he would have to win the third place match to qualify for the state tourney.
Facing Coppell sophomore Kasi Kavali, the District 5 singles champion, Davidson dropped the first set 6-0 and fell behind 1-0 in the second. Then the momentum shifted to the Jesuit standout as he roared back to take the next six games and force the final set. The two held serve except for breaking the other in the fourth and fifth games. In the tiebreak, Davidson won the first point, dropped the second and then charged ahead winning the next five points. He secured the victory when Kavali's volley went long, prompting Davidson to erupt in celebration for the 06, 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory.
He will now compete in the UIL 6A State Tournament, May 7-8, at the Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio.
Jesuit's doubles team of
William Wayne and Augustus Chu were eliminated in the Round of 16 on Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Matteo Bejar and Tolliver Hunt of El Paso Coronado.
