O’Connell is a 2006 graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland, winning a national championship during his senior season. During his championship season, O’Connell was named a second-team All-American, also earning State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Year honors. After graduating, O’Connell rejoined the Red Dragons as a graduate assistant, picking up another national championship in 2009. O’Connell was elected to develop the University of Dallas men’s lacrosse team in 2009, leading the Crusaders through their first two seasons as a NCAA Division III lacrosse program. O’Connell won a pair of state championships as an assistant coach at Coppell High School, has additionally coached at Parish Episcopal High School and works with Iron Horse Lacrosse.
