The Rangers (6-3) were out-rebounded, 28-25 by the Padres, who outscored the Blue and Gold in the paint, 40-14. The Rangers scored eight second chance points and 15 points off of 19 Serra turnovers, finishing the game shooting 39.5 percent from the field and converting 76.5 percent of their free throw attempts.
The two squads came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, with Jesuit Dallas finishing the opening half shooting 47.1 percent from the floor. Serra posted a 14-6 opening run in the first quarter, but the Rangers closed a 5-0 run with a traditional three-pointer by Kunasek, bringing the lead down to a single possession with 1:44 remaining in the opening quarter.Â
With five minutes remaining in the second, a put-back jumper by junior
Jacob Palisch, three-pointer by Jankovich and pull-up jumper from the left elbow by Hill gave the Blue and Gold its first lead of the game at 20-19 with 4:53 left in the opening quarter. Hatzmann buried a three-pointer to put the finish touches on a 12-2 run that saw the Rangers hit 5-of-7 shots and two three-pointers, taking a 23-21 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the half.Â
Serra would answer with an 11-2, half-ending run, forcing four Ranger turnovers and converting 6-of-7 free throw attempts while the Rangers cooled off, missing their three shot attempts during the Padres run. Serra entered halftime with a seven-point, 32-25 lead after Lee Jones converted a layup at the halftime buzzer.
The Padres outscored the Rangers, 13-4, in the third quarter to take a 16-point lead headed into the third. Jesuit Dallas kept pace with Serra in the fourth, but were unable to string together a run to cut into the Padres lead, and Serra shook off an 8-3 Ranger run in the final 2:04 of the fourth to close out the victory.
Jesuit Dallas will next play at 3:45 p.m. PST (5:45 p.m. CST) in the third-place game of the Chris Vontoure Spartan Classic. The Rangers will either play hosting De La Salle or Charter Valley, the game that tipped off after the conclusion of Friday's contest.
