Amarillo Tascosa used a 16-point, first quarter lead and 20 points off of Jesuit Dallas turnovers to topple the Rangers, 80-58, in a Knights of Columbus Dallas Classic semifinal on Friday evening in Walsh Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Michael Jankovich logged a team-high 15 points, one of two Rangers to finish in double digits. Fellow second year
Marcus Hill went 2-of-5 from three-point range to finish with 12 points, while junior
Jacob Palisch picked up a season-high eight points.Â
Senior
Shawn Regan picked up six points and five boards, tying sophomore
Reid Hatzmann for the team lead in rebounds. Hatzmann tacked on six points, while junior
Mitch Prendergast recorded a team-leading three assists.
The two squads were tied, 7-7, with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter, before the Rebels erupted for a 16-0 run to end the opening period. Another 8-0 run by Tascosa in the second quarter improved the lead to 39-15 with 2:30 remaining in the half.Â
Senior
Rusty Landon converted a traditional three-point play to snap the Rebel run before Jankovich was fouled while burying a three-pointer, converting the free throw to give the Rangers a quick, 7-0 run. Hill buried a three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in the second, helping the Rangers end the half on a 10-5 run.
The Rangers were unable to string together several runs in the third and fourth quarters, but Amarillo Tascosa never allowed the Blue and Gold to cut the lead into single-digits, and a 16-7 run over the last 4:57 of the fourth sealed the championship berth for the Rebels.
Jesuit Dallas will take on Frisco Heritage in the third place game of the Knights of Columbus Dallas Classic, which will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
