In front of an inspired homecoming crowd and using a game ball delivered via helicopter by professional golfer Jordan Spieth '11, the Jesuit Dallas football team closed their second consecutive unbeaten district season with a 51-26 victory over Berkner at Postell Stadium.
The Ranger run game paid dividends, combining for six total touchdowns. Jesuit was led offensively by senior
John Wunderlick, who scored three times while racking up 198 yards. Fellow fourth year
Evan Jackson hit the 1,000-yard mark for rushing yards this season with 79 yards on Friday, finding pay dirt twice. Senior quarterback
Jacob Palisch scored Jesuit's final rushing touchdown, adding 244 yards through the air on 18-of-26 passing.
Jesuit's defense forced three Berkner turnovers, including fumble recoveries by seniors
Jack Lynch and
Luke Nolan and an interception by Ranger fourth year
John Guzman. Senior
Matt Eubanks led the team with 10 tackles, followed by nine tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage and a forced fumble, for fourth year
Michael Schoettmer.
Damien Cunningham also forced a Berkner Fumble, posting two solo tackles.
Junior
Israel Ollarzabal kicked a 29-yard field goal to start the evening's scoring before Jesuit (7-3, 7-0 UIL 9-6A) forced a turnover on downs. The Rangers were held without a score on the ensuing drive, and Berkner (5-5, 3-4) took the lead after a 10-play, 57-yard drive. The Rangers responded with a quick, four-play drive culminating with a 20-yard scamper from Wunderlick to put Jesuit back on top.
Wunderlick added touchdowns on Jesuit's next two possessions, blossoming the lead to 27-8 with 1:16 left in the first half. Palisch responded to a Berkner touchdown with a six-yard scoring run of his own to build the lead to 20 points, and Ollarzabal knocked a 28-yard attempt through the uprights to give the Blue and Gold a 37-20 lead at halftime.
Berkner opened the second half with an elongated drive, eclipsing 5:12 of game time and resulting in a touchdown. The Rams recovered a Jesuit fumble and looked to close the gap to one possession, but Guzman's interception at the Rangers' own 21-yard line tipped the scales back in favor of the home team.
Jesuit ran out the third quarter clock with a 10-play, 79-yard drive and scored on the second play of the fourth with an 11-yard run by
Evan Jackson to increase the lead. Jackson tacked on a one-yard plunge with 2:56 left on the game clock to secure the victory.
The Rangers will next host Naaman Forest (5-5, 3-3) in a UIL Bi-District round game on Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m.
