Despite a furious fourth quarter comeback, the Rangers dropped a 72-62, overtime decision to Waco Midway in the 2016 Knights of Columbus Bob Stras Dallas Classic championship semifinal on Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium.
Junior
Marcus Hill scored a team-best 19 points, also dragging down a game-high eight rebounds while going 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Hill's performance matches his highest scoring output this season, matching his 19-point outing against Trinity Christian on November 22. Senior
Mitch Prendergast moved his double-digit scoring streak to three with a 17-point outing, while sophomore
Max Abmas scored 12 points.
Senior
Jeff Grimes grabbed six rebounds off the bench, while senior
Michael Jankovich and junior
Reid Hatzmann recorded three assists each. Jesuit (5-2) converted 82.1 percent of free-throw chances and scored 14 points off of 20 Waco Midway turnovers, but struggled from the floor, shooting 22.6 percent from deep.
A 6-2 run to end the first quarter gave Jesuit a one-point lead heading into the second, but it would be the last lead the Rangers would acquire during the contest. Midway used a 9-0 run to take the lead, and warded off a game-tying, 11-5 run by the Rangers with an 8-2 run to take a 44-36 lead with 7:11 remaining.
Jesuit staged a furious comeback over the next six minutes, punctuated by a three-pointer from Jankovich with 2:04 left to bring the Rangers within one possession before Prendergast sent the Jesuit faithful into a frenzy with a three-pointer off a feed from Hatzmann with 1:12 in regulation to send the game into overtime. However, in the extra session the forward contingent for Waco Midway took over the contest, outscoring Jesuit, 18-8 to earn the championship game berth.
The Rangers will battle the MacArthur Cardinals at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 in the third-place game of the Knights of Columbus Bob Stras Dallas Classic Tournament.
