Lacrosse Opens Season With Decisive Win

Sean The Jesuit Dallas lacrosse squad opened the 2016 season in resounding fashion, defeating Flower Mound, 12-5, on Thursday evening at Postell Stadium.

Eight different Rangers found the back of the net, led by junior attack Trey Wiederecht, who finished with a team-leading four goals. Senior midfielder Sean Rilley scored a pair of goals, while junior attack Daniel Burnum scored a goal and added a team-leading three assists, tying Wiederecht with a team-high four points on the evening. Additionally, sophomore midfielder David Sprock, senior midfielder Blake Buell, senior defender John Michael Priddy, senior attack Garrett Munck and sophomore midfielder Grayson Hassell tallied goals for the Blue and Gold.

Priddy snagged 12 ground balls for the Rangers (1-0), while junior goalkeeper Luke Millican made eight stops in cage. Jesuit converted 12-of-14 clear opportunities and won 6-of-10 second half face offs, securing a total of 35 ground balls compared to 19 gathered by the Jaguars (0-1), including 12 during a four-goal second quarter.

Opening the game with four unanswered goals, Wiederecht found twine twice in the opening quarter to help vault the Rangers to an early, 3-0 advantage heading into the second. An unassisted goal by Priddy bolstered the lead to four early in the second quarter before Flower Mound snapped its scoring streak with a pair of goals, holding the Rangers from another score for over 10 minutes of game time.

The Ranger shooters would not be held at bay in the final 90 seconds of the first half, scoring three goals to head into halftime with a 7-2 lead. Wiederecht scored twice within a 15-second span, with Sprock's first goal of the season finding the back of the net with 23 seconds left in the half to give the Rangers convincing momentum heading into the second stanza.

Flower Mound opened the scoring in the second half with a pair of early goals, but Jesuit quickly turned the tables on the Jaguars by scoring five unanswered goals, including four tallies in the third. Burnum, Hassell and Buell all scored within a four-minute span late in the quarter before Rilley's second goal of the game with 24 seconds in the quarter sent the squad to a six-goal advantage. Munck scored the squad's final goal of the game with 5:04 remaining in the fourth, while Millican kept the Jaguars off the scoring column with three fourth-quarter saves.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Rangers will host Kingwood in an 11 a.m. bout at Postell Stadium before a weekend trip to Houston to battle The Woodlands and Strake Jesuit on Feb. 20 and 21, respectively.
