First Quarter Offense Keeps Unbeaten Start Intact

Senior Garrett Munck logged a four-point afternoon, helping Jesuit Dallas to its second win of the season over a talented Kingwood High School squad, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon inside of Postell Stadium.

Munck finished Sunday's game with two goals and two assists, moving to third on the Jesuit Dallas scoring list with five points on the year.  Junior Trey Wiederecht continued his hot start to the 2016 campaign, finding twine twice and improving his season scoring total to six goals.  Junior Daniel Burnum tied Munck for the team lead in points, logging a goal and scoring a team-high three assists.  Senior Blake Buell, junior Reece Ellison and sophomore Grayson Hassell each added a goal for the Rangers (2-0).

Buell and Ellison helped lead the Rangers defensively with three ground balls each, while junior goalkeeper Luke Millican made five saves in cage while securing an additional three ground balls for the Blue and Gold.  The Rangers converted 18-of-20 clear attempts and combined to snag 23 ground balls, 10 more than Kingwood.

Jesuit Dallas dominated the first quarter, scoring four goals in the opening stanza to take an early lead.  Hassell started the scoring with a tally seven minutes into the game, followed by Weiderecht's first goal, which came at the 6:56 mark of the quarter.  Burnum assisted on Weiderecht's goal before recording another helper on Munck's first goal of the evening with 1:11 remaining in the first.  Munck earned a spot in the scoring column on three of the Rangers' first quarter goals, assisting on Buell's tally with 1:03 remaining.

After a scoreless second, Kingwood struck halfway into the third quarter before Munck returned the lead to four goals with an unassisted tally at the 6:05 mark.  Kingwood scored two unanswered to reduce the Ranger advantage to two goals, but Burnum struck to snap a near 14-minute Jesuit Dallas scoreless streak.  Ellison and Wiederecht scored back-to-back goals to answer a goal by the visitors with seven minutes remaining, and the Rangers secured critical face-offs and ground balls down the stretch, extending their late fourth quarter possessions to secure their second win of the season.

On Saturday, the Rangers will travel to Houston for a two-game weekend series, facing off against The Woodlands at 2 p.m. before battling Strake Jesuit at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.
