Earning the first 20-win season since the 2011-12 campaign, the Jesuit Dallas basketball squad saw its season come to an end in the Bi-District Round of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Basketball Tournament, 57-56, in overtime to Mesquite on Tuesday evening at Berkner High School.
Senior
Rusty Landon scored a team-leading 18 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor, while adding a team-leading seven rebounds. Landon was one of three Rangers to finish in double digits, joined by sophomores
Marcus Hill and
Michael Jankovich, both of whom finished with 14 points.
Jesuit Dallas (20-10) closed out the game shooting 39.3 percent from the floor, compared to a 41.2 percent evening from the Skeeters (19-9). Both teams scored 11 points off of turnovers, while the Rangers led by 12 points with 32 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Senior
Ben Kunasek finished with three rebounds, a team-leading four assists and four steals, while junior
Alan Garcia pulled down five boards.
Mesquite's Bryson Robinson hit the eventual game-winning free-throw with five seconds remaining in overtime, finishing with 29 points on 12-of-24 shooting.
The Rangers struck early in the first, taking a 17-7 lead at the first quarter buzzer after eight unanswered points opened the contest. Hill buried a pair of three-pointers during that stretch, while Landon converted a traditional three-point play to help vault the Blue and Gold to the early lead.
Mesquite used an 8-0 run early in the second to slice the lead to two points, but a jumper by Jankovich and three-pointer by Kunasek put the Rangers back into the drivers seat with a three-possession lead. Hill knocked down a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Robinson scored a layup at the buzzer to send Jesuit into the half leading, 30-21.
Robinson's layup would begin a 7-0 scoring run bridging the two halves, once again bringing the Jesuit lead to two points. Junior
Jacob Palisch tipped in a wayward shot before a three-pointer by Landon sparked a 13-4 Ranger run that gave the Blue and Gold their first double-digit lead since the second quarter with 2:10 left in the first. Jankovich scored a layup with 32 seconds left to bolster the lead to 12 points, but Mesquite went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to quickly reduce the lead to five points heading into the fourth.
The Skeeters tied the game with 1:49 remaining in the half before a running jumper by Jankovich put the Rangers ahead once again. Robinson sent a jumper through the cylinder with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, and a last chance jumper by Kunasek rattled around the rim before falling away from the hoop, sending the Rangers to their fifth overtime game of the season and third in their last five contests.
Mesquite's Daniel Thomas-Ray hit a jumper a minute into the extra session before Landon scored his 18th point of the evening on a runner with 1:20 left. Robinson drew contact with five seconds remaining on a shooting attempt, hitting his second free throw to give Mesquite its second lead of the game. A half-court shot by Kunasek was on line, but was inches short to end the contest.
