John Paul II Box Score l Frisco Box ScoreA 13-round shootout loss ended the Jesuit Dallas hockey squad's AT&T Metroplex City Championship hunt, 3-2, to Frisco on Wednesday evening at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Richardson. The Rangers punched their ticket to the semifinal with a 4-3, comeback win over John Paul II on Tuesday, Mar. 1.
Michael Schmidt finished the tournament with three goals, while
Louis Helsen IV led the team with four points, all recorded on assists.Â
Anthony Calabrese also finished with three points on two goals and an assist while
Nicholas Colombo recorded a pair of assists.Â
George McBey totaled 58 saves over the two-game schedule.
Against the Cardinals, a pair of goals by Schmidt, including the go-ahead tally with 13:37 remaining in the third period, helped push the Rangers past John Paul II and into the semis. Calabrese opened the scoring with a goal 10 minutes into the first, but back-to-back scores by JPII gave the Cardinals a one-goal lead headed into the second.
Duncan Cadeddu lit the lamp 20 seconds into the third, knotting the game up once again before Schmidt scored with 13:37 and 7:33 remaining to spot the Rangers a two-goal lead. Despite John Paul II scoring with 1:28 left in regulation, the Jesuit defense held firm for the win.
Calabrese scored the Rangers' first goal of the semifinal 34 seconds into the opening period, but a late, shorthanded goal by Frisco tied the contest heading into the second. Back-to-back goals by Jesuit, scored by Nicholas Mersch and Schmidt, put the squad ahead by two tallies headed into the third period, but Frisco tied the contest with 3:21 remaining in the third to send the game into an extra period.
After a scoreless overtime, the two squads went into a shootout. Helsen, Calabrese and
JonMikal Dragojevic each scored during the opening five rounds to send the two teams into a 3-3 tie, at which point McBey and the Frisco netminder did not allow a goal over the next seven rounds. In the 13th round of the shootout, Thomas Blake scored to send Frisco to the championship round. Jesuit Dallas closes the season with a 13-12 record.
