In a battle of two perennial powers in the state of Texas, six unanswered goals by top-ranked Highland Park handed the No. 3 Jesuit Dallas Rangers their second loss of the season, 9-6, on Thursday evening at Highlander Stadium.
Five Rangers found twine, led by a two-goal performance from junior
Daniel Burnum. In addition, seniors Sean Riley and
Jack Freeman joined junior
Trey Wiederecht and sophomore
David Sprock in the scoring column, while Ranger fourth year and Skidmore commit
Garrett Munck joined junior
Reece Ellison with an assist apiece. Junior goalkeeper
Luke Millican made seven stops in cage, and the Rangers won the face-off battle, 10-8.
Burnum kicked off the scoring with a tally less than four minutes into the game unassisted before Riley tallied a goal with 22 seconds remaining in the opening stanza to vault the Rangers into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead. Highland Park tied the game early in the second quarter before Freeman scored Jesuit's final goal of the first half with 1:07 remaining in the second.
The Scots erupted for six unanswered goals spanning from the end of the half into the three-minute mark of the third quarter before the Rangers mounted a comeback. With 2:31 left in the third, Sprock tallied an unassisted goal to reduce the Highland Park lead to five goals headed into the fourth. Jesuit Dallas shut out the Scots in the final quarter, but were unable to continue the run sparked by goals from Burnum and Wiederecht.
Jesuit Dallas will aim to rebound on Tuesday, Apr. 12, when the squad welcomes Southlake Carroll to Postell Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
