Sharpshooters Catapult Rangers Past Longhorns

The Ranger guard contingent erupted for nine first half three-pointers, using a 23-point first quarter to run away from W.T. White, 80-45, in the "Battle for the Saddle" on Tuesday evening at Walsh Gymnasium.

Jesuit (13-7, 2-2 UIL 9-6A) shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 12-of-30 from range, anchored by 20 points from senior Mitch Prendergast. The Mercer commit shot 7-of-10 from the floor, added seven rebounds and three assists, and was one of three Rangers to score in double digits alongside 13 points. Junior Marcus Hill hit a trio of three-pointers, scoring 13 points and falling one rebound short of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Max Abmas added 12 points for the Blue and Gold.

Junior Michael Jankovich scored eight points and brought down eight rebounds, and fellow third year Keagan Nwosu posted an eight rebound performance. Junior Reid Hatzmann recorded a game-high three steals, logged a team-leading four assists and scored eight points. Jesuit out-rebounded W.T. White, 26-15, scored nine second chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds, and forced 11 W.T. White turnovers.

Over the first six minutes, Jesuit shot 7-of-11 from the floor and buried three shots behind the arc, helping the Rangers erupt for a 17-4 lead that blossomed to a 23-7 advantage at the first quarter break. The Ranger outside excellence continued in the second quarter, as five three-pointers helped Jesuit win the quarter, 27-16, and go into halftime with a 27-point lead.

Jesuit increased the lead to 38 points with a nine-point run late in the third, closing the impressive night with an 11-4 fourth quarter run. Highlighted by five points from senior Andrew Olinger and two from junior Joey Preboy, the Rangers shot 50 percent over the final 6:30 to pick up their second district win.

The Rangers will travel to Richardson, Texas on Friday, January 13 and face off against Berkner. Earlier this season, Jesuit battled the Rams in the In-and-Out Burger Allen Holiday Invitational, securing a 60-47 win over Berkner on December 29. Tip-off of Friday's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
