Soccer Dominates to Earn Meintser Semifinal Berth

Junior Christian Lerma and senior Chase Burciaga scored their first goals of the season, vaulting the Ranger soccer team, ranked 22nd in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer, past Bishop Lynch, 2-0, in the first round of the 36th Annual Jesuit-Meintser Invitational Soccer Tournament on Thursday at Postell Stadium.

The Rangers (1-1-0) controlled the pace of the game from start to finish, resulting in their first win of the season. Early in the contest, Lerma took advantage of a wide open run towards the net off of a brilliant one-touch pass by Andrew Gilchrist, establishing possession and sending a scorching shot past the outreached hands of the Bishop Lynch goalkeeper, off the right post and into the net. Junior goalkeeper Joseph Banul kept the Friars scoreless in the first half, as the Jesuit defense, anchored by seniors Alex Garcia and James LaRoe, broke up several potential chances before halftime.

In the second half, a corner kick by senior Ethan Moore found Burciaga on the far outside part of the box, a chance that the midfielder turned into a goal with a header that blew past the Bishop Lynch defense and goalkeeper. Senior Luke Ostrander only had to make one save in the second half, helping lead the Rangers to the tournament-opening win and advancing Jesuit into the championship bracket.

On Friday, Jesuit will battle Sachse in the Meintser Tournament semifinal. Sachse upset nationally-ranked No. 16 North Mesquite, 3-0, to advance to the semifinal. No. 21 Flower Mound Marcus and fellow University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A member Skyline will clash for the second final berth at 7 p.m.
