A record-setting performance by senior
Jeff Grimes and suffocating second half defense vaulted Jesuit to a second consecutive road victory, 85-64, over Richardson on Tuesday evening.
Â
Grimes scored a career-high 20 points, shooting 10-of-11 from the floor to register the best field goal percentage (90.9 percent) over the last two seasons by a Jesuit basketball player. Grimes' career outing anchored an inspired Jesuit effort, which saw the Rangers outscore the Eagles, 28-11, in the fourth quarter.
Â
Junior
Michael Jankovich led the Blue and Gold with 23 points, including converting 10-of-12 free throw attempts, while senior
Mitch Prendergast added 19 points. Jesuit (14-7, 4-2) shot 58.5 percent from the floor, holding Richardson (14-8, 4-2) to 22.2 percent from the field in the second half.
Junior
Marcus Hill brought down a team-leading seven rebounds, while third year
Reid Hatzmann and Prendergast logged five assists each. Sophomore
Max Abmas was a force defensively, blocking three Richardson shots.
Â
Similar to the Rangers' previous two victories, the Blue and Gold took an early lead, shooting 5-of-8 over the first five minutes to take a 14-7 lead. Once the Eagles caught their stride, the two squads battled throughout the first half until Richardson took its first lead with 1:36 remaining before halftime.
Â
A wild third quarter saw five ties and 13 lead changes before Jesuit entered the fourth on a 9-3 run to take a four-point lead. An 11-2 run to open the final quarter bolstered the Ranger lead to double-digits with 4:54 remaining.
Grimes scored 14 of the team's 28 fourth quarter points, and Jesuit finished the game shooting 3-for-3 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line over the final two minutes to secure the critical 9-6A victory, which lands Jesuit in a three-way tie for second alongside Richardson and Coppell.
