Shutout Propels Jesuit to First District Victory

Jesuit Dallas maintained its unbeaten start to University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A play, dominating Richardson, 3-0, on Friday evening at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

Junior Christian Lerma continued his rampant pace to begin the season, scoring his seventh goal to begin the evening for the Rangers (4-2-1). Lerma has scored in five of the team's seven games this season, and will enter Tuesday on a four-game scoring streak. Senior Ethan Moore scored his second goal of the year, while fellow fourth year Tommy Flaim notched his first goal of the season. Senior Luke Ostrander and junior Joseph Banul combined for the shutout, as Ostrander made one first half save before Banul shut the door on the Eagles with a second half stop.

Jesuit pummeled the Richardson defense with 18 shots, drawing eight free kicks and forging three corner attempts. Lerma scored on Jesuit's first shot of the game just under 10 minutes into regulation. Senior Chase Burciaga lobbed a long ball over the Richardson defense, finding Lerma in stride who beat a defender and sent the game-opening tally home from close range.

Junior Israel Ollarzabal crossed the ball to junior Ryan Davis soon after Lerma's goal, another incredible chance for the Blue and Gold that was snuffed out by the crossbar. Ostrander's save with 6:06 left in the first was the only opportunity for Richardson in the opening stanza, sending Jesuit into the break leading, 1-0.

Moore scored nine minutes into the second half, taking a pass from fellow senior Manuel De Oyarzabal, who worked past a defender and got the ball deep inside the six-yard box before passing to Moore, who finished. Flaim rocketed home a free kick attempt for a highlight reel goal with 6:38 remaining, bending the ball over the wall into the right upper corner from 25 yards out.

The Rangers harnessed complete control of the game in the second half, placing eight shots on target compared to only one Richardson shot.

Jesuit will return to play on Tuesday, Jan. 31 against Skyline. The Rangers and Raiders will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. from Postell Stadium.
