Hatzmann's Career-High Helps Derail Berkner Comeback

A career effort from junior Reid Hatzmann and success from three-point range provided the Rangers enough buffer room to survive a late surge from Berkner, 59-55, on Tuesday evening at Walsh Gymnasium.

Hatzmann shot 7-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-5 from distance, closing out the bout with 16 points, finishing the game with new career-highs in made field goals and points, besting his previous high of 15, obtained on Dec. 29, 2015 against Plano East. Junior Marcus Hill finished the game with a team-high 21 points, hitting his first four three-point attempts to finish 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Jesuit Dallas (19-9 overall, 8-4 UIL 9-6A) closed the game shooting 54.8 percent from the floor, racking up 22 points in the paint and knocking down nine three-pointers. Senior Mitch Prendergast led the team with seven assists, while senior Alan Garcia dragged down a team-leading five rebounds. Jesuit out-rebounded Berkner (16-11, 6-6), 25-20, scoring 12 points off of seven Ram turnovers. In addition, the Blue and Gold clinched a three-game season sweep over their University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A rivals.

The Rangers shot 6-of-9 to start the game, but only held a three-point lead going into the second quarter after Berkner went 5-of-10 in the opening stanza. Hatzmann hit a three-pointer as the first quarter buzzer sounded, and senior Jeff Grimes followed suit with a last-second layup prior to halftime, sending Jesuit into the break with a four-point, 33-29 advantage.

Grimes' layup carried over to the second half, sparking an 11-2 run that propelled Jesuit to its first double-digit lead with 5:57 remaining in the third. Jesuit held the decisive lead until the fourth quarter, when Berkner went on a 14-7 run to whittle the Ranger lead down to two points with 49 seconds remaining. However, Hill was able to knock down a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining to ice the contest and hand Jesuit its eighth district victory.

The Rangers will next celebrate senior night on Friday, Feb. 10 against Richardson. Prior to tip-off, Jesuit seniors Alan Garcia, Jeff Grimes, Andrew Olinger, Jacob Palisch and Mitch Prendergast will be recognized along with senior members of the Jesuit Dallas cheerleading squad. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Walsh Gymnasium.
