Jesuit Drops District Opener to Coppell

Jesuit Dallas dropped its University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A opener on Tuesday with a 5-0 setback to Coppell at Wright Field. The Rangers fell victim to a strong performance from Cowboy pitcher John Krodos, who struck out 10 while only allowing five hits.

Junior Bijan Kamalipour went 2-for-3 from the plate, while sophomore Jaden Woodson, seniors Mark Ready and Jake Ryan picked up one hit each to complete the Rangers' stat line. Sophomores Caden Carlson, Julian Colombo and Woodson forced walks to reach base, but Jesuit finished the contest leaving eight runners on base.

Senior pitcher and University of Arizona commit J.J. Montenegro struck out six batters in his fourth start of the season. Junior Tyler Murrah entered the game in relief, striking out two and only allowing one hit over 1.2 innings of work.

Montenegro struck out two of the first three batters, and Jesuit got into scoring position when senior Mark Ready singled and stole second in the bottom of the first but were unable to score the game-opening run. After a 1-2-3 inning by Montenegro, Kamalipour singled to lead off the second inning, the beginning of an inning which saw Jesuit load the bases with no outs, but were again held scoreless.

Coppell struck first with a run in the third inning, allowing Kodros to settle in from the rubber. Jesuit did not place a runner in scoring position until the bottom of the sixth, when Carlson reached second on a passed ball, but Jesuit was unable to get a run to cross the plate.

The Cowboys added runs in the fourth and fifth inning along with a two-spot in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead headed into the final frame. Coppell relief pitcher Trey Becerra came in to close the game, striking out the side to clinch the win.

Jesuit will look to split the season series against Coppell on Friday, when the Rangers and Cowboys will square off at Coppell High School. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
