Jesuit Dallas Hockey Clinches Playoff Berth

In desperate need of a point in the standings to keep their postseason aspirations alive, the Jesuit Dallas hockey team battled with the Coppell Cowboys, using an inspired comeback to force overtime before falling in shooting, 4-3, on Thursday at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch. Despite the loss, Jesuit clinched the final playoff spot in the AT&T Metroplex Hockey League City Championship Tournament.

Alexander McBey scored a goal with 2:47 remaining in the second to tie the contest, 3-3, going into the third period. Andrew McBey and Carson Platt scored the squad's first two goals early in the second, propelling Jesuit to its first lead of the contest. Christopher Black recorded a team-leading two points on two assists, while JonMikal Dragojevic and Marco Campioli assisted on McBey's equalizer. Royce Allred finished the game with 22 saves to help propel the Rangers to the postseason.

Allred stopped five of the Cowboys' first six shots, but Coppell lit the lamp for the first time with 2:34 left in the first. Jesuit tied the game 17 seconds into the second period when McBey put home a pass from Black, before Platt logged his eighth goal of the year to take the lead with 10:09 left. Over the final 10 minutes of the second period, Coppell tallied a pair of unanswered goals to take back control.

A Coppell hooking penalty gave Jesuit a power play opportunity in the waning moments of the second, a chance which saw McBey light the lamp off of passes from Dragojevic and Campioli for the critical equalizer. Both Jesuit and Coppell launched six attempts at the net in the third, but neither team scored to send the game into overtime. Allred stood tall in the extra session, making six saves, but the Coppell defense limited Jesuit to only one shot, sending the tied game into a sudden-death shootout. Jesuit was held without a goal during the three-round shootout, while Coppell found twine on its first penalty attempt to secure the victory.

The Rangers were among a four-team tie for the final two spots in the AT&T Metroplex League Playoffs, earning the final spot over Plano West and Denton County due to having the lowest goals allowed total among the three teams. With the win, Jesuit will play McKinney at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 20 in the first round of the playoffs, scheduled for the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Frisco, Texas.
