Lerma's Game-Winner Propels Jesuit to Regional Quarterfinals

Junior Christian Lerma's goal in the waning moments of Friday's University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 2-6A Area Round clash pushed No. 7 Jesuit Dallas past College Park, 3-2, in a wildly entertaining affair at College Station High School.

Lerma joined seniors Chase Burciaga and Ethan Moore in the scoring column, pushing the Rangers (16-3-1) to the UIL Regional Quarterfinal round for the second consecutive season. Moore added an assist on Burciaga's goal, while Burciaga assisted on both Moore's equalizer and Lerma's game-winner. Fourth year Luke Ostrander worked the game in goal, withstanding an early second half surge from College Park to keep the Cavaliers away from the goal through the late stage of the second half.

In the opening half, Jesuit Dallas controlled the pace of play, generating several quality chances early. College Park sent a series of long shots towards the goal in the final moments of the opening stanza, but defensive saves by seniors Alex Garcia and James LaRoe and several stops by Ostrander kept the Cavaliers off the board. With 3:55 remaining in the first, senior Tommy Flaim sent a ball into the box that eventually reached Burciaga, who responded with a scorching shot that cruised past the College Park goalkeeper and into the goal.

College Park scored on a header off of a corner kick to tie the bout in the 46th minute, taking the lead in the 49th after a throw-in slipped through the Ranger defense, allowing the Cavaliers to put a loose ball over the goal line.

After the Cavaliers took the lead, Moore blasted a shot from 37 yards out that found twine just underneath the crossbar to tie the bout once again. The two teams threatened down the stretch, but Lerma put Jesuit ahead for good with four minutes left in regulation.

Burciaga lofted the ball ahead from midfield, landing between two defenders and the College Park goalkeeper. Lerma threaded the needle and sent a soft touch over the head of the keeper, rolling into the goal for the go-ahead score. Ostrander and the Jesuit defense shut the door on the Cavaliers over the final four minutes to secure the win.

Jesuit will meet the Mesquite Skeeters from District 11-6A, who defeated state-ranked No. 13 Naaaman Forest in penalty kicks on Friday. The two teams will meet on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. inside Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland, Texas.
