Seniors Shine in Shutout of Lake Highlands

Senior JJ Montenegro logged five innings of shutout work, and a 2-for-4 performance by senior Mark Ready sparked Jesuit Dallas to a 6-0, University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A win over Lake Highlands on Tuesday at Lake Highlands High School.

Ready hit a double and single, driving in fourth and seventh inning runs to pace the Rangers (16-11, 6-3 UIL 9-6A), who have won six of their last seven district bouts. Sophomore Jaden Woodson added a pair of hits and runs were scored by senior Will Guzman and Pete Panko alongside juniors Maccoy Lopez and Tyler Murrah.

Montenegro struck out five batters in five innings of work to earn his third win of the year, while junior Peter Delkus and senior Wyatt Hasson threw one inning each to complete the shutout.

The Rangers got on the scoreboard early, as Ready scored on a balk after earning a game-opening walk. Montenegro retired the first six Wildcats in order, while Jesuit scored its second run on a passed ball that plated Lopez in the top of the third. In the fourth inning, the Rangers plated three runs on two hits, the first on Ready's double down the right field line before Ready and junior Tyler Murrah scored on a passed ball and Lake Highlands throwing error.

After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the third, Montenegro settled in, retiring the final nine batters he faced in order before Delkus entered in the sixth. Lake Highlands loaded the bases with one out in the frame, but Delkus forced a 4-3 double play to end the sixth.

Ready's second RBI single scored Panko in the top of the seventh, and Hasson retired the Wildcat seventh in order, striking out the final batter of the game to clinch the win for Jesuit.

The Rangers will next welcome Lake Highlands to Wright Field for a Thursday night showdown. First pitch between Jesuit Dallas and Lake Highlands is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
