Game Recap: Lacrosse - Class A |

Reigning Champs Book Return Trip to THSLL Final Four

Jesuit Dallas, the reigning Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) Division I State Champions will head to Katy, Texas next weekend to reclaim their crown after an 8-5 win over Austin Westlake in the THSLL Super Region on Sunday. The Rangers will battle Highland Park in the THSLL State Semifinal at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at Rhodes Stadium in Katy, Texas.

Junior Grayson Hassell scored a hat trick for the Rangers (13-5), who advance to their seventh state semifinal over the past eight seasons. Junior David Sprock added a pair of goals, while classmate Jack Tabor closed a four-goal week with a third-quarter tally. Sophomores Peter Buell and Jacob Jackson concluded the Rangers' scoring column with one goal each.

Senior Dixon Smith secured a team-high eight groundballs, followed by four from sophomore Matthew Priddy and three by sophomore Tommy Hovivian. In cage, senior Luke Millican made nine saves and added two groundballs, aiding an effort that saw Jesuit win the groundball battle, 27-20. In addition, the Rangers converted 21-of-26 clear opportunities.

Jesuit Dallas scored the first goal of the contest with 5:23 left in the first, when Sprock found twine with an unassisted tally. Burnum increased the Jesuit Dallas lead to two goals, scoring with six seconds left in the opening quarter to set the pace. Westlake (13-5) got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, but Sprock's second goal with two seconds left in the second returned the lead to two going into halftime.

The late second quarter goal began a run of six unanswered tallies that handed Jesuit a comfortable, seven-goal lead. Hassell scored twice in the third alongside goals from Buell, Jackson and Tabor. Westlake attempted to comeback with a late flurry of fourth quarter goals, but the goal difference was too much to overcome, propelling Jesuit to a playoff matchup against the Scots.

Saturday's semifinal clash will mark the fourth time that the rivals have met in either the state semifinal or state championship, most recently facing off in the 2016 THSLL State Championship game, a 9-4 victory for Jesuit Dallas. In 2012, Highland Park defeated Jesuit, 5-4, in the last time the two teams met in the state semifinals.

The winner of the 6 p.m. semifinal will take on either The Woodlands or Episcopal School of Dallas, two undefeated teams that will battle for the first state championship berth at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 13.
