Stellar Pitching Propels Baseball to Richardson Sweep

Jesuit Dallas used a pair of stellar pitching performances to sweep Richardson in University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A competition. The Rangers captured an 11-1, six-inning win on Mar. 20 at Wright Field before edging the Eagles, 4-3, on Mar. 23 in Richardson, Texas.

Senior Paul Gramling led the charge for Jesuit Dallas, going 2-for-6 with a pair of runs driven in over the two-game sweep. Jesuit Dallas displayed immense patience at the plate, forcing 16 walks over the two games while the Ranger pitching staff only allowed three free passes. Senior Maccoy Lopez joined junior Garrett Reuben and sophomore Jalon Mack in the two-hit club while Mack scored a team-leading three runs.

Junior Jack Lynch struck out 12 batters, allowing only one unearned run on three hits in the Tuesday series opener. Lynch has racked up 47 strikeouts over five starts this season, improving to 3-2 on the season with the win. Senior Tyler Murrah moved to 4-0 on the season with his fourth complete game of the year, throwing seven innings of two-hit work while striking out eight hitters.

How it Happened – Game One

  • Lopez reached base to lead off the bottom of the first, scoring on a balk to tie the game at 1-1 following an early score from Richardson. Jesuit would take the lead in the third inning after a one-out double to left center by Mack. Lopez drove Mack home with a single through the right side, plating to sophomore to give Jesuit its first lead of the series.

  • Reuben crushed a deep ball to center field for a leadoff triple in the fourth but was called out advancing to home on a fielder's choice by Gramling. Sophomore Tanner Jones reached base on catcher's interference before a single by junior Marco Marrero scored Gramling and put Jones into scoring position. Murrah laced a ball to second base and reached first safely to score Jones.

  • A leadoff walk to Lopez set the stage for a game-breaking fifth inning. Sophomore Jaden Woodson reached on an error that put runners on the corners with no outs in the inning. Reuben cracked a single to center to score Lopez before Marrero reached on an error that scored Woodson and Reuben to increase the Jesuit Dallas lead to six runs.

  • Jesuit scored four runs on three hits in the sixth to close out the contest. A triple to center by Woodson scored Mack, a single to second by Gramling brought Woodson to home plate and Reuben scored on a wild pitch to bring the Rangers to the brink before junior Caden Carlson forced a bases-loaded walk to score classmate Miles Page and clinch the 10-run rule victory.

How it Happened – Game Two

  • Richardson struck first again, scoring an unearned run in the first to take the early advantage. The Eagles' pitching staff held the Rangers in check through the first three innings, holding the Blue and Gold without a hit until the fourth inning.

  • A leadoff walk to senior Bijan Kamalipour helped set the stage for the Blue and Gold for a game-tying inning. Gramling singled through the right side to move Kamalipour into scoring position before a Richardson error allowed the senior to score the team's first run of the game.

  • Jesuit took control of the contest with a three-run fifth inning sparked by a one-out single by Lopez. Three consecutive walks plated Lopez, a passed ball scored Lynch and a wild pitch scored senior Cole Beach to hand the Rangers a three-run lead going into the sixth.

  • The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but left the tying run aboard. Murrah slammed the door on the Richardson rally with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, retiring the side and clinching the win with an impressive five-pitch inning.
