Soccer Concludes Season with Playoff Penalty Kick Loss to Sachse

The Jesuit Dallas soccer team battled University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 10-6A Champion Sachse to a scoreless draw but fell 4-3 in penalty kicks to end the season in the UIL Region 2-6A Bi-District Round. Jesuit Dallas concludes the season with a 6-6-8 record to earn the program's 15th consecutive playoff berth.

Jesuit out-shot Sachse, 15-8 throughout the bout, sending eight shots on target. Senior midfielder Alex Reznicek placed several quality chances towards the Mustang cage but were unable to record the game-winning tally prior to penalty kicks. Senior Ryan Davis and junior Diego Sierra logged one shot on goal apiece.

The Ranger defense isolated the Mustangs throughout the bout, allowing only eight shots and four shots on goal while turning away three corner kicks and 11 free kicks. Jesuit goalkeeper Joe Banul recorded four saves in the net to lead the charge, but a defensive corps that included seniors Flavio Calderon, Andrew Gilchrist, Alek McGlone, Israel Ollarzabal and junior Kazuma Hirota earned the regulation shutout.

In the first half, the Rangers earned an early opportunity when Reznicek launched a shot on goal in the sixth minute. After a Sachse yellow card in the 11th minute, junior John Scott Lacina sent a shot high. Overall, momentum rested on the side of Jesuit Dallas throughout the first half as the Rangers out-shot the Mustangs, 5-1 in the first 40 minutes but were unable to get a ball across the goal line prior to the halftime break.

Sachse increased the pressure in the second period but only attempted two shots despite earning two of its three corner attempts in the latter half. In the first overtime, Sachse took the only two attempts, both of which were saved by Banul. Jesuit Dallas took one final attempt to move on to the UIL Area Round in the second overtime, but two shots were turned aside by the Mustangs, setting the stage for penalty kicks.

Sierra, Gilchrist and Ollarzabal scored the first three penalty kick attempts while Banul stopped Sachse's first attempt to spot the Rangers a 3-1 lead. However, Jesuit would miss their final two attempts while three consecutive conversions by Sachse allowed the Mustangs to advance to the area round.
