Defense Shines in District-Opening Shutout Win

Despite a 14-hour rain delay that pushed kickoff from its original Friday night slot to a Saturday morning matinee, Jesuit Dallas posted its first shutout win since 2015 with a rousing, 42-0 effort against Plano West at John Clark Stadium. The Rangers capture their first district victory of the season and move to 2-2 on the season with the win heading into their penultimate home game next Friday against McKinney Boyd.

Junior quarterback Kevin Shuman threw four touchdown passes, finishing the contest 7-of-19 for 173 yards. Shuman connected on touchdown passes to seniors Nick Hafertepe, Jack Hajdu, Brody Hilberth and Travis Whisler. Hajdu led the receiving corps with two catches for 66 yards, followed closely by Whisler's two receptions for 64 yards.

On the ground junior EJ Smith led Jesuit with 154 yards and a touchdown, carrying the ball 17 times to average 9.1 yards per carry. Sophomore Jake Taylor added 11 rushes for 52 yards, aiding a Ranger ground game that totaled 256 yards and averaged five yards per carry. Junior Chase Phillips added his first varsity touchdown

The Jesuit defense racked up nine tackles for loss and two sacks while limiting Plano West to 96 rushing and 74 passing yards. Senior Collin Lark was a force for the Rangers, posting six solo tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Junior Houston Hummel racked up five tackles and secured a turnover for the Rangers with an interception deep in Plano West territory. Junior Jack Barton added six tackles, senior Noah Villasana contributed five stops while senior Pierce Strong and junior Nash Corcoran broke up two passes each.

How it Happened

  • On Friday, Jesuit Dallas traveled to Clark Stadium for the contest's original 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Saturday 21. However, a lightning delay preempted the contest and the game was rescheduled for Saturday morning after a two-hour delay on Friday evening.

  • Plano West opened the contest, taking advantage of a muffed punt to move inside the red zone. However, Jesuit forced a three-and-out at its own 25 and watched a 40-yard field goal attempt from the Wolves sail left of the upright, providing the Rangers with momentum and the ball at their own 23-yard line.

  • On Jesuit's first play from scrimmage, head coach Brandon Hickman reached into his bag of tricks for a running back pass from Taylor to Whisler. The 31-yard reception primed a 77-yard drive that culminated with Shuman finding Hafertepe for an 18-yard touchdown reception.

  • The two teams traded possessions until Jesuit regained possession with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter. Long rushes from Smith and junior Mitchell Campbell brought the Rangers into the red zone before Shuman floated a fantastic, 26-yard pass to Hilberth for Jesuit's second touchdown. Hilberth's first career touchdown reception spotted the Rangers a 14-0 lead with 23 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

  • A failed Plano West drive spotted the ball at the Jesuit 46-yard line for the Rangers' first drive of the second quarter. Shuman completed a 54-yard pass to Hajdu on the Rangers' first play of the drive for a touchdown, providing Hajdu his second touchdown reception of the year while providing Jesuit a 21-0, second quarter lead.

  • Another Plano West punt gave the Rangers the ball at their own 13-yard line with 9:30 remaining. Jesuit responded with a resounding, 87-yard drive which only took 1:53 off the clock. Shuman found Hafertepe for a 27-yard, over-the-shoulder catch while Taylor rushed four times during the drive for 34 yards to put the ball at the Plano West 35-yard line.

  • Shuman fired a ball into the end zone caught by Whisler, who snagged the pass despite defensive pass interference for his first touchdown reception of the season. The touchdown gave the Rangers a 28-0 lead into the halftime break.

  • Jesuit opened the second half with a nine-play, 70-yard drive which saw Smith carry the ball seven times for  60 yards, capping the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 35 points.

  • In the fourth quarter, Plano West faced a third down deep in their own territory. Hummel tipped a pass attempt from Wolves quarterback Danny Davis into the air, then was able to secure the tipped ball for his first varsity interception. With the ball at the Plano West 23-yard line, Jesuit punched in its sixth touchdown of the game on a nine-yard plunge from Phillips for his first varsity touchdown.
