Sierra Scores Two Goals, Comeback Falls Short Against Sachse

Junior Diego Sierra scored two goals for the Rangers, but two late tallies by Sachse allowed the Mustangs to defeat Jesuit, 3-2, in a non-district bout on Friday at Postell Stadium. The Rangers finish the non-district portion of the 2019 season with a 1-2-1 record ahead of Tuesday's district opener against Plano West.

The Rangers created several strong chances off of 13 Sachse fouls but were stopped five times by Mustang goalkeeper Jose Gonzalez. Sierra scored on two of his three shots on goal while juniors Will Kelton, Stratton Ross, Renin Seely and senior James Koshakji each launched a shot on target. Seely would add an assist on Jesuit's first goal while senior Connor Tullis made two saves in the first half to keep the game tied heading into halftime.

Jesuit put the pressure on the Sachse midfield early, leading to a loose pass intercepted by the Rangers and sent to Seely who was able to find Sierra inside the box for the game-opening score. Sachse would strike in the 13th minute on a penalty kick to equalize the contest at 1-1. Ross, Seely and Sierra would place shots on goal in the first half while the Ranger defense held Sachse to one additional shot, but neither team took the lead prior to the halftime horn.

Sachse began to mount opportunities in the second half, earning a corner kick and free kick before taking the lead on an intercepted clear which led to an advantage and goal for the Mustangs. A Jesuit corner kick in the 46th minute led to a quality chance from Kelton, but Gonzalez was able to make the save. Sachse increased the lead to two in the 56th minute and held the Rangers in check until the waning moments of the contest.

With seconds remaining in regulation, Sierra drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick, sending the shot past Gonzalez to cut the lead to one. However, the Rangers were unable to get possession off the restart prior to the end of the bout as the comeback fell seconds short.

Jesuit will travel to Plano, Texas for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Wolves before returning home on Friday to face Boyd. The Rangers will play at home in four of their next seven games, including matchups against Allen (Feb. 1), McKinney (Feb. 8) and Plano East (Feb. 12).
