Rangers Unable to Topple First Half Lead, Fall to No. 3 Allen

Jesuit racked up over 325 passing yards and junior EJ Smith caught a pair of touchdowns, but Allen scored 41 points in the first half en route to ending the Rangers' hope for an unbeaten run through District 9-6A on Friday with a 58-33 win over the Rangers at Eagle Stadium. The Rangers outscored Allen, 17-16 in the second half, but the salvo from the Eagles was enough to overpower Jesuit and hand the Blue and Gold its first district loss.

Senior Rance Holman completed 25 passes for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both of which were scored by Smith. The senior finished the contest with 169 all-purpose yards, rushing the ball 10 times for 19 yards and catching a team-leading eight passes for 130 yards. Senior Wyatt Garrett added a 74-yard touchdown reception on a trick pass from junior Kyle Heckel, who also scored the Rangers' longest touchdown run of the season with a 93-yard masterpiece in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Jesuit racked up two sacks and nine tackles for loss. Senior Mitchell Campbell recorded three tackles for loss and a sack, tying classmate Zach Pendola for the team lead. Senior Tommy Roy added four tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. The Ranger defense held Allen to a 2-for-10 clip on third down conversions, continuing a dominating trend in third down defense over the last five games.

The two teams combined for 1,297 yards of offense and 91 points as Allen racked up 515 yards of total offense compared to 340 by Jesuit. The Rangers out-possessed Allen, 26:19-21:41.

How it Happened
  • Allen scored a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage to take an early, 7-0 lead. Jesuit batttled back with a 10-play, 58 yard drive punctuated by a 28-yard field goal by Brown to bring the Rangers to within four points with 8:14 left in the opening quarter.

  • After another Allen touchdown, the Rangers loked poised to take the lead on an 11-play, 56-yard drive as the Rangers marched down the field and converted a pair of long third-down plays, but Holman lost the ball on a hard hit after an 11-yard rush, a fumble recovered by Allen with 4:13 left in the first.

  • The Eagles scored early in the second quarter, then added another long touchdown pass on their next drive to build a 25-point lead. Holman completed a 65-yard pass to Smith at the 7:03 mark to stop the Allen scoring run, but another quick scoring drive returned the lead to the Eagles.

  • Smith scored his second touchdown of the game on a 14-yard reception to bring the Rangers within 18 points. Allen converted field goals on its final two drives of the first half to go into halftime leading, 41-17, then secured another field goal midway through the third quarter to take a 44-17 lead. Jesuit was held scoreless in the third quarter but kept the Eagles at bay as a drive deep in Allen territory was snuffed out with a five-yard sack by Campbell on third and 20.

  • In the fourth quarter, Allen scored with 9:11 to further the lead. However, the Jesuit offense came alive in the waning moments of the game as a punt deep in Ranger territory provided the opportunity for Heckel to break off a 93-yard touchdown run down the sideline. After Allen scored on the first play from scrimmage in the ensuing drive, Jesuit responded with a trick-play, 85-yard touchdown pass from Heckel to Garrett, which brought Jesuit's final point total to 33 points.
