Comeback Falls Short Against No. 17 Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs, Pa. – A 21-point performance by senior Darryl Brown powering 30 points in the paint by the Jesuit Dallas basketball team was not enough to topple Sulphur Springs as the Wildcats bested the Rangers, 65-52, on Friday at Sulphur Springs H.S.

Brown shot 8-of-13 from the floor and finished a busy night on the court with five boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Junior Gavin Perryman scored 10 points while senior T-Monk Simons and junior Camden Roy posted identical, seven-point performances. Seniors Luke Lucido and Eli Steger brought down three boards apiece as Jesuit scored 11 points off of 10 offensive rebounds, but were outrebounded, 30-18.

Jesuit jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Sulphur Springs failed to convert a bucket until the 5:06 mark. However, the Wildcats took their first lead of the game with 3:31 remaining in the first, hitting four consecutive buckets to take a 10-8 advantage. The run resulted in a 17-7 advantage for Sulphur Springs heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Sulphur Springs kept momentum going with a 10-2 run to open the quarter, building a 27-15 lead with 3:30 left in the half. Jesuit would only convert three field goals during the second quarter, were held without a three-pointer, and went into halftime trailing the Wildcats, 30-19.

A three-pointer by Roy and jumper by Brown cut into the Ranger lead, sparking a small run by Jesuit that brought the Rangers to within 10 points. Springs scored seven unanswered points to end the quarter, but Jesuit opened the fourth on a 12-4 run to draw to within nine points. Jesuit would get to within nine points of Sulphur Springs, but the Wildcats converted three free throws and a layup over the final 90 seconds of the game to keep Jesuit out of reach.

The Rangers will break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action for the M.T. Rice Holiday Tournament, which will begin on Dec. 26 in Waco, Texas. The Rangers will open the tournament at 3 p.m. on the 26th against Nacogdoches before concluding pool play at 6 p.m. against Hendrickson. Both games will take place at the Midway Middle School main gym. The remaining games will be determined at the conclusion of pool play.
